Principal Features

HAYNES® 75 alloy (UNS N06075) is a solution-strengthened nickel-chromium alloy with moderate strength to 1200°F (650°C). It is principally used in low stress elevated temperature application requiring reasonable oxidation resistance, and is approximately equivalent to alloy 600 in performance. Alloy 75 is used in a number of fabricated part applications in the gas turbine and aerospace industries in Europe, and is also employed in general industrial heating uses. The alloy is readily formed and fabricated using conventional techniques.

Principal Features

HAYNES® 244® alloy is a new Ni-Mo-Cr-W alloy developed for static parts in advanced gas turbine engines which require low thermal expansion at temperatures up to 1400°F (760°C). It offers a higher maximum use temperature than other low thermal expansion alloys currently available, including a 100-200°F (55-110°C) improvement over HAYNES® 242® alloy. The alloy is age-hardenable by formation of Ni2 (Cr,Mo,W) domains, which are structurally similar to the strengthening domains in 242® alloy. Judicious alloying with tungsten increased the thermal stability of these domains and lowered the coefficient of thermal expansion. Other important properties such as oxidation resistance and low-cycle fatigue performance are comparable or better than those of 242® alloy.

Haynes 244 Alloy – High-Temperature Corrosion-Resistant Superalloy

Haynes 244® is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy designed for exceptional high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance in extreme environments. Principal Features

HAYNES® HR-160® alloy (UNS N12160) alloy is a solid-solution-strengthened nickel-cobalt-chromium-silicon alloy with outstanding resistance to various forms of high-temperature corrosion attack. HR-160® alloy has excellent resistance to sulfidation and chloride attack in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. The alloy also has exceptionally good resistance to oxidation, hot corrosion, carburization, metal dusting, nitridation, and corrosion attack by low melting point compounds such as those formed by phosphorus, vanadium, and other impurities. The alloy is especially suited for applications in high temperature corrosive environments generated by combustion of low grade fuels or processing of chemical feed stocks with corrosive contaminants such as sulfur, chlorine, fluorine, vanadium, phosphorus, and others. The alloy is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 2200°F (1204°C).

Ease of Fabrication

HAYNES® HR-160® alloy has excellent forming and welding characteristics. It may be forged or otherwise hot-worked, providing it is held at 2050°F (1121°C) for time sufficient to bring the entire piece to temperature. As a consequence of its good ductility, HR-160® alloy is also readily formed by cold working. Cold- or hot-worked parts should be annealed and rapidly cooled in order to restore the best balance of properties. HR-160® alloy can be welded by a variety of techniques, including gas tungsten arc (TIG), gas metal arc (MIG), and resistance welding.

Heat Treatment

HR-160® alloy is furnished in the solution annealed condition, unless otherwise specified. The alloy is solution annealed at 2050°F (1121°C) and rapidly cooled for optimum properties. Intermediate annealing, if required during fabrication and forming operations, can be performed at temperatures as low as 1950°F (1066°C).HR-160® alloy is furnished in the solution-annealed condition, unless otherwise specified. HAYNES® HR-160® alloy combines properties which make it highly useful for service in severe high-temperature corrosive environments. Hafnium

Hafnium is a heavy, steel-gray metal closely related to zirconium. General applications include nuclear reactor control rods, neutron absorption, alloy additive in various superalloys, and plasma torch welding tips.

 

Hafnium is available from ATI in common mill forms including plate, sheet, foil, rod, and wire. Hafnium metal is also available in a number of forms for alloying. For higher purity applications, crystal bar is available in chunk form (chopped bars), whole bars, or milled chips. Hafnium sponge is also available for standard alloying needs. ATI also produces hafnium powder, available in standard mesh sizes ranging from 80 – 325 mesh x down.

 

Hafnium is available in a number of different grades. Mill products conform to ASTM B776. Hafnium used for alloy addition comes in four different grades that depend on zirconium content.

Tantalum

Tantalum is a hard, ductile, acid-resistant, highly conductive (of heat and electricity) metal with a density of 16.65 g/cm3. It has a high melting point 3017°C (5463°F). It is often used as an alloy additive and is frequently combined with niobium to increase niobium's corrosion resistance properties.

 

When mixed with alloys such as niobium, it has excellent resistance to a wide variety of corrosive environments. These environments include mineral acids, most organic acids, liquid metals, most salts and liquid metals.

Zirconium Alloys Zirconium is a commercially available refractory metal with excellent corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties, very low thermal neutron cross section, and can be manufactured using standard fabrication techniques. The unique properties of zirconium made ideal cladding material for the U.S. Navy nuclear propulsion program in the 1950's.

The initial commercial nuclear power reactors used stainless steel to clad the uranium dioxide fuel due to cost. But by mid-1960 zirconium alloys were the principle cladding material due to the superior neutron economy and corrosion resistance. These same zirconium alloys are available to designers of high level nuclear waste disposal containers as internal components or external cladding. Additional advantages of zirconium alloys for long term nuclear waste disposal include excellent radiation stability and 100% compatibility with existing Zircaloy fuel cladding to alleviate any concerns of galvanic corrosion. The various zirconium alloy grades used in water-cooled nuclear reactors are also available for nuclear waste disposal components. Reactor grade designates that the material has low hafnium content suitable for nuclear service. The hafnium is typically 0.010% maximum. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) offers widely recognized grades of zirconium alloys. Zircaloy-2 (Grade R60802) is composed of Zr-1.5%Sn- 0.15þ-0.1%Cr-0.05%Ni and has been predominantly used as fuel cladding in Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) and as calandria tubing in CANadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactor types. Zircaloy-4 (Grade R60804) has removed the nickel and increased the iron content for less hydrogen uptake in certain reactor conditions. The alloy is typically used as fuel cladding in Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) and CANDU reactors. The nominal Zircaloy-4 composition is Zr-1.5%Sn-0.2þ-0.1%Cr. Refinements in the ingot homogeneity have allowed tighter control of the alloy elements within the ASTM specification. Controlled Composition Zircaloy offers optimized in-reactor corrosion resistance by adjusting the alloy aim point within the ASTM specification ranges. Controlled Composition Zircaloy-4 has lower tin (1.3%) and higher iron (0.22%) than the standard grade. Zr-2.5Nb (Grade R60904) is a binary alloy with niobium to increase the strength. The alloy has been utilized for pressure tubes in CANDU reactors. Non-reactor grade Zirconium 702 (Grade R60702) has 4.5% maximum hafnium and is also available from Wah Chang. Zirconium alloys have superior thermal properties compared to other traditional materials in consideration for spent nuclear fuel containers. Zirconium alloys have a thermal conductivity more than 30% higher than stainless steel alloys. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion for Zirconium alloys is nearly one-third the value for stainless steel giving zirconium alloys superior dimensional stability at elevated temperatures. This is an advantage in nuclear waste containers where temperatures could exceed 200ºC for hundreds of years. Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4 have a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure at room temperature as an alpha phase. The beta phase is body centered cubic (BCC) and begins to form upon heating to approximately 810ºC. The fraction of beta phase increases with temperature until complete transformation to beta phase

HAYNES® 263 alloy (UNS N07263) is an age-hardenable nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy developed specifically to combine good age-hardened strength properties with excellent fabrication characteristics in the annealed condition. HAYNES® 263 alloy exhibits excellent intermediate temperature tensile ductility, and is not normally subject to strain age cracking problems common for gamma prime strengthened alloys.  Its strength at elevated temperature is not quite as high as materials such as HAYNES® 282® alloy, Waspaloy alloy, or R-41 alloy.  However, it is much easier to form or weld than Waspaloy alloy and R-41 alloy.  Because HAYNES® 282® alloy exhibits superior tensile, creep-rupture, and low cycle fatigue strength than HAYNES® 263 alloy and has significantly greater fabricability than Waspaloy and R-41 alloys, it is replacing HAYNES® 263 alloy in many applications.

HAYNES® 263 alloy is normally used for applications up to about 1650°F (900°C). Its oxidation resistance is comparable to that for other gamma-prime-strengthened superalloys.

Applications

HAYNES® 263 alloy combines properties which make it suitable for a variety of fabricated component applications in both aircraft turbine engine and industrial turbine applications. These include low-temperature combustors, transition liners, and some ring components.

Haynes 188 is a cobalt-based alloy which possesses a unique combination of properties. It has excellent high temperature strength and oxidation resistance to 2100°F (1150°C) combined with good post-aging ductility.

Alloy 188 has average room temperature tensile properties in the bright annealed condition of 137.2 ksi (946 MPa) ultimate strength, 67.3 ksi (464 MPa) yield strength and 53% elongation. At 1800°F (980°C) the alloy has ultimate and yield strengths of 35.2 ksi (243 MPa) and 19.0 ksi (131 MPa), respectively, with 59% elongation. Cryogenic temperatures do not significantly affect the ductility of alloy 188, but strength levels are increased markedly.

The excellent oxidation resistance of Haynes 188 results from minute additions of lanthanum, which modifies the protective oxide scale in such a manner that the oxide becomes extremely tenacious and retards diffusion when exposed to temperatures through 2100°F (1150°C).

Haynes 188 exhibits good ductility after prolonged exposure at temperatures of 1200, 1400, and 1600°F (650, 760 and 870°C) for 16,000 hours.

Nickel is a chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a hard and ductile transition metal. Pure nickel is chemically reactive, but large pieces are slow to react with air under standard conditions because a passivation layer of nickel oxide forms on the surface that prevents further corrosion. Even so, pure native nickel is found in Earth's crust only in tiny amounts, usually in ultramafic rocks,[5][6] and in the interiors of larger nickel–iron meteorites that were not exposed to oxygen when outside Earth's atmosphere.

Meteoric nickel is found in combination with iron, a reflection of the origin of those elements as major end products of supernova nucleosynthesis. An iron–nickel mixture is thought to compose Earth's outer and inner cores.[7]

Use of nickel (as natural meteoric nickel–iron alloy) has been traced as far back as 3500 BCE. Nickel was first isolated and classified as an element in 1751 by Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, who initially mistook the ore for a copper mineral, in the cobalt mines of Los, Hälsingland, Sweden. The element's name comes from a mischievous sprite of German miner mythology, Nickel (similar to Old Nick). Nickel minerals were green, like copper ores, and were known as kupfernickel - Nickel's copper - because they produced no copper. An economically important source of nickel is the iron ore limonite, which is often 1–2% nickel. Other important nickel ore minerals include pentlandite and a mix of Ni-rich natural silicates known as garnierite. Major production sites include the Sudbury region, Canada (which is thought to be of meteoric origin), New Caledonia in the Pacific, and Norilsk, Russia.

Alloy 405 (UNS N04405) is a nickel-copper alloy with high strength and toughness. Alloy 405 also has excellent corrosion resistance in a range of media including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid and alkalis. Due to its increased sulfur content Alloy 405 has enhanced machinability. Alloy 405 is chiefly used for automatic screw machine stock and is not generally recommended for other applications.

nickel-iron alloy, FeNi36 , plays a crucial part in so many of their household controls and office appliances. This role was established soon after its discovery 100 years ago in 1896. FeNi36 is the forerunner of a family of controlled expansion nickel-iron alloys which form the essential part of bimetals and thermostats. FeNi36 itself is still used today in vast numbers of household appliances, from electric irons and toasters to gas cookers and fire safety cutoffs. In the office, computer terminals and TV screens make extensive use of FeNi36 and other Ni-Fe alloys for shadow masks, frames, and cathode ray tube gun parts.

Other applications for these special alloys are continuing to be found in industry for advanced electronic components, filters in mobile phone networks and even as tank membranes for massive liquefied natural gas transport ships.

Discovery and Nobel Prize

When FeNi36 was discovered in 1896, its unique property of low and linear expansion over a wide temperature range allowed the production of effective bimetals which could be used in safety cut-off devices for gas cookers and heaters. For his work on the nickel-iron system and the discovery of FeNi36 , Charles Edouard Guillaume of Imphy was awarded a Nobel prize for Physics early in the 20th century.

One of the traditional uses for FeNi36 has been for the thermostat of electric immersion heaters, used for a variety of domestic and commercial water heating systems. Operation of the thermostat is based upon differential expansion between a brass tube and an inner FeNi36 rod, the resulting movement being used to actuate a microswitch. The set temperature is commonly adjustable in the range between 48-83°C.

Physical Properties

FeNi36 is a 36% nickel iron alloy which has the lowest thermal expansion among all metals and alloys in the range from room temperature up to approximately 230°C. The FeNi36 alloy is ductile and easily weldable, and machinability is similar to austenitic stainless steel. It does not suffer from stress corrosion cracking.

The mean coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of FeNi36 from 20-100°C is less than 1.3 x 10-6°C-1. The Curie point is 230°C, and density is 8.1 kg.m-3.

Current Uses of Nickel Iron Alloy FeNi36 Cathode Ray Tubes

Between the range -100 to +200°C FeNi36's CTE is very low. This feature is very useful for many specific applications in high tech industry. Cathode ray tubes for television and display screens are increasingly required to provide greater user comfort, with higher contrast, improved brightness and sharper definition. This progress has been made possible by the use of shadow masks made from FeNi36 strip, with its low coefficient of thermal expansion allowing precise dimensioning of components even with changing temperature.
