• It is also characterized by its resistance to variable loads and impacts.

APPLICATIONS OF AISI 8620 ROUND BARS:

• In the carburized condition this alloy is used for gears, ring gears, shafts and crankshafts.

MACHINABILITY OF AISI 8620 ROUND BARS:

• Machining is done prior to carburizing to within as close a tolerance as possible. Finish machining, after heat treatment and/or carburizing, should be at a minimum so as not to impair the hardened case of the part. Machining may be done by conventional means prior to heat treatment – after carburizing machining is usually limited to grinding.

HEAT TREATMENT OF AISI 8620 ROUND BARS:

• This alloy may be hardened by heating to 1500 F followed by a water quench. Carburize at 1650 to 1700 F in an appropriate carburizing medium and oil quench to harden. Improved carburized case and core properties can be obtained by furnace cooling from carburizing at 1650 – 1700 F and then reheating to 1575 F.

TEMPERING OF AISI 8620 ROUND BARS:

• Tempering of carburized parts is done at 250 to 300 F and this will result in the alloy having a core strength of approximately 135 ksi minimum with Rockwell C case hardness of 90. Tempering of heat treated and water quenched parts (not carburized) is do

The hardening treatment is relatively simple, quenching in air or oil from 810-830°C followed by tempering, with excellent mechanical properties being obtained. Owing to its strength this steel can be used for compression and transfer moulding as well as injection moulding and the relative freedom from distortion makes it superior to case hardening steels for complex mould applications. With limited availability of certain sizes in EN30B West Yorkshire Steel can also offer ‘high carbon’ EN30B to grade X45NiCrMo4. EN30B will machine readily in the annealed condition in which it is supplied.


Chemical Composition of EN30B

Applications EN30B alloy steel can be used for many purposes where toughness and high tensile strength are requirements. For example: components of small presses including anvils, collars, strikers or hammers, rams or punch holders. Other applications include rivet snaps, air hardening cold chisels, crimping tools, clutch keys, racks, pinions and angle pins for pressure die casting tooling. EN30B will machine readily in the annealed condition in which it is supplied.
Forging Heat the steel carefully to the forging temperature of 1000-1100°C, soak well. After forging, cool slowly in a furnace to 100°C maximum and anneal immediately.

Annealing To obtain the softest condition heat carefully to 630-650°C. Soak for a minimum of 2 hours, then cool in the furnace or in air. It is advisable to repeat this treatment to obtain the best machining characteristics.

Recently I discovered that a large manufacturer of commercial and industrial driveline components machines companion flanges out of AISI 1141 resulfurized steel. The part in question is something we would like to manufacture in house but I have doubts about using the same material based on the chemistry and mechanical strengths. ASTM A311 only mentions mechanical requirement up to 3" diameter for Type A and 4.5" diameter for Type B cold drawn steel. Our need would be for 7" diameter and larger.

From the research I have done, resulphurized steel is generally not suitable for fatigue applications due to the poor toughness and high sulfur content. Does anyone have any knowledge of using this steel for high torque (approx 9000ft-lbf) driveline applications?

If anyone has any experience with this steel and its applications I would appreciate the information or knowledge.

I do not have direct experience with this application therefore will offer an opinion based on general failure analysis experience and some strength of materials understanding.

If the application were for the torque tube/shaft, I would stay away from resulphurized steel for the reasons found through your research. Torsional stresses in shafts or tubes essentially resolve to patterns of helical tensile stresses and sulfide inclusions can provide initiation sites for fatigue cracks. And everyone knows that we should just say NO to crack (sorry about that crack -- just couldna resist).

On the other hand, for a flange the stress is pure shear if it is a good coupling and I believe would be less sensitive to fatigue provided you design for a large margin below the fatigue limit because localized yielding in shear mode tends to blunt crack leading edges in fatigue.

You are wise to use caution and should wait for some more input from those who understand steel making practice and what effects those practices have on the metallurgy of larger sections that you are proposing.
