HAYNES® 188 alloy (UNS R30188) is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten alloy that combines excellent high-temperature strength with very good resistance to oxidizing environments up to 2000°F (1095°C) for prolonged exposures, and excellent resistance to sulfate deposit hot corrosion. It is readily fabricated and formed by conventional techniques, and has been used for cast component. Other attractive features include excellent resistance to molten chloride salts, and good resistance to gaseous sulfidation.
Readily FabricatedHAYNES® 188 alloy has good forming and welding characteristics. It may be forged or other hot-worked, providing that it is held at 2150°F (1175°C) for a time sufficient to bring the entire piece to temperature. As a consequence of its good ductility, 188 alloy is also readily formed by cold working. The alloy does work-harden rapidly, however, so frequent intermediate annealing treatments may be needed for complex component forming operations. All hot- or cold- worked parts should be annealed and rapidly cooled in order to restore the best balance of properties.
The alloy can be welded by both manual and automatic welding methods, including gas tungsten arc (TIG), gas metal arc (MIG), electron beam and resistance welding. It exhibits good restraint welding characteristics.
Heat TreatmentWrought HAYNES® 188 alloy is furnished in the solution heat treated condition, unless otherwise specified. The alloy is normally solution heat-treated at 2125-2175°F (1163-1191°C) and rapidly cooled or water quenched for optimal properties.
Annealing at temperatures less than the solution heat-treating temperature will produce some carbide precipitation in alloy 188, which may affect the alloy’s properties.
ApplicationsHAYNES® 188 alloy combines properties which make is suitable for a variety of fabricated component applications in the aerospace industry. It is widely used in established military and commercial gas turbine engines for combustion cans, transitions ducts, and afterburner components. It shares applications in newer engine programs with a more recently developed material, 230® alloy, which possesses improved properties.

HAYNES® 242® alloy (UNS N10242) is an age-hardenable nickel-molybdenum chromium alloy which derives its strength from a long-range ordering reaction upon aging. It has tensile and creep strength properties up to 1200 – 1300°F (649 – 704°C) which are as much as double those for solid solution strengthened alloys, but with high ductility in the aged condition. The thermal expansion characteristics of 242® alloy are much lower than those for most other alloys, and it has very good oxidation resistance up to 1500°F (816°C). Other attractive features include excellent low cycle fatigue properties, very good thermal stability, and resistance to high-temperature fluorine and fluoride environments. HAYNES® 244® alloy has been developed as an upgrade from 242® alloy, with enhanced tensile and creep properties up to 1400°F (760°C), as well as a lower coefficient of thermal expansion.

HAYNES® NS-163® alloy is a Co – 28Cr – 21Fe – 8Ni – 1.3Ti – 1Nb alloy produced as wrought sheet, strip and wire material with high creep strength and relatively low density. Its properties bridge the gap between the capabilities of current solid-solution strengthened alloys and the oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) mechanical alloys. HAYNES® NS-163® alloy exhibits good oxidation resistance up to 1800ºF (982ºC), but is capable of being coated for exceptional oxidation resistance at even higher temperatures.
The high level of creep strength in HAYNES® NS-163® alloy is achieved via a unique high-temperature Nitride Dispersion Strengthening (NDS) treatment performed after forming, welding and fabrication is complete. Unlike other materials of comparable performance, produced by powder metallurgy, HAYNES® NS-163® alloy is conventionally melted (VIM + ESR) and processed (via hot and cold rolling) in the same manner as the solid solution strengthened materials and can be conventionally formed, fabricated and welded into nearly any conceivable shape currently produced in other superalloys.

Vacuum-melted, nickel-based HAYNES® R-41 (UNS N07041) alloy has exceptionally high strength at temperatures in the range of 1200 to 1800°F (649 to 982°C). The alloy is a precipitation-hardening type and strength is developed by various solution annealing and aging heat treatments. Because of its high strength and good oxidation resistance, the alloy is being used in afterburner parts and nozzle diaphragm partitions in current gas turbine engines. In the annealed condition, the alloy is ductile and has essentially the same forming characteristics as 18-8 stainless steel and other nickel-based alloys. It is stronger, however, and has a greater resistance to forming. The alloy has been formed with success on drop hammers, expanding mandrels and stretch formers. R-41 alloy is now being replaced in many applications by HAYNES® 282® alloy, due to the superior fabricability of 282® alloy.
Mechanical properties can be tailored by selecting various combinations of solution annealing and aging treatments. In general, higher solution heat treating temperatures result in better room-temperature ductility and improved formability. Stress-rupture strength is also improved by this type of treatment. Lower solution annealing temperatures produce higher tensile strengths at temperatures up to about 1700°F (927°C). The effect of solution heat treating temperature can be seen in tensile and stress-rupture data.
As leading stockists and suppliers of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, we offer premium-quality HAYNES R-41, a nickel-based superalloy renowned for its exceptional high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and superior creep resistance. Designed for extreme environments, Haynes R-41 is widely used in aerospace, gas turbines, industrial heating, and chemical processing industries.
Key Features of HAYNES R-41 Alloy:✔ High-Temperature Performance – Maintains strength and stability at temperatures up to 1800°F (982°C).

HAYNES® 214® alloy (UNS N07214) is a nickel – chromium-aluminum-iron alloy, developed to provide the optimum in high-temperature oxidation resistance for a wrought austenitic material, while at the same time allowing for conventional forming and joining. Intended principally for use at temperatures of 1750°F (955°C) and above, 214® alloy exhibits resistance to oxidation that far exceeds virtually all conventional heat-resistant wrought alloys at these temperatures. This is attributable to the formation of a tightly adherent Al2O3-type protective oxide scale, which forms in preference to chromium oxide scales at these high temperatures. At temperatures below 1750°F (955°C), 214® alloy develops an oxide scale which is a mixture of chromium and aluminum oxides. This mixed scale is somewhat less protective, but still affords 214® alloy oxidation resistance equal to the best nickel-base alloys. The higher temperature Al2O3 – type scale which 214® alloy forms also provides the alloy with excellent resistance to carburization, nitriding and corrosion in chlorine-bearing oxidizing environments.
FabricationHAYNES® 214® alloy, like many high aluminum content nickel-base alloys that are intended to be age-hardened by intermediate temperature heat treatment, will exhibit age-hardening as a result of the formation of a second phase, gamma prime (Ni3Al), if exposed at temperatures in the range of 1100 – 1700°F (595 – 925°C). As a consequence of this, 214® alloy is susceptible to strain-age cracking when highly stressed, highly-restrained, welded components are slowly heated through the intermediate temperature regime. The keys to avoiding this problem are to minimize weldment restraint through appropriate component design, and/or heat rapidly through the 1100 – 1700°F (595 – 925°C) temperature range during post-fabrication heat treatment (or first-use heat-up).
With the exception of the above consideration, HAYNES® 214® alloy does exhibit good forming and welding characteristics. It may be forged or otherwise hot-worked, providing it is held at 2100°F (1150°C) for a time sufficient to bring the entire piece to temperature. Its room temperature tensile ductility is also high enough to allow the alloy to be formed by cold working. All cold or hot-worked parts should be annealed and rapidly cooled in order to restore the best balance of properties.
The alloy can be welded by a variety of techniques, including gas tungsten arc (TIG), gas metal arc (MIG) or shielded metal arc (coated electrode) welding.
Heat-TreatmentHAYNES® 214® alloy is furnished in the solution heat-treated condition, unless otherwise specified. The alloy is normally solution heat-treated at 2000°F (1095°C) and rapidly cooled or quenched for optimum properties. Heat treating at temperatures below the solution heat-treating temperature will result in grain boundary carbide precipitation and, below 1750°F (955°C), precipitation of gamma prime phase. Such lower temperature age-hardening heat treatments are not suggested.
