A829 - 4140steel plate is a structural-quality, alloy-steel plate that can be supplied in the following conditions:

  • As rolled,
  • Annealed,
  • Normalized,
  • Normalized and Tempered.

 

A829 - 4140 can be used for a wide variety of applications where greater toughness and wear resistance is needed over lower carbon grades.

The list for uses of A829 - 4140 is long and includes: strippers, holder blocks, mold bases, ejectors, forming dies, back-up and support tooling, fixtures, stubs, couplings, reamer bodies, tie rods, gears, gear racks, valves, chain links, jigs, spindles, sprockets, tool bodies, tool holders, guides, tracks, ways, slides, wear strips or parts, molds, brake dies, trim dies, bolsters, machinery parts and components.

 

APPLICATIONS OF AISI / SAE 4140

  • This alloy finds many applications as forgings for the aerospace and oil and gas industries, along with myriad uses in the automotive, agricultural and defense industries, Typical uses are forged gears and shafts, spindles, fixtures, jigs and collars.

 

FORGING 4140 ALLOY STEEL

  • Forging of this steel should be carried out between 2200 and 1650 º F (1200 and 900 º C). The lower the finishing temperature from forging, the finer will be the grain size. This alloy should ideally not be forged below 1650º F (900º C) and should be slow cooled after forging.

 

HEAT TREATMENT OF AISI 4140

  • Heat treatment is carried out after hot working to render the steel suitable for machining, and to meet the mechanical property ranges specified for the steel’s particular applications. There are several ways to heat treat a given steel part and it is only through practice that the optimum treatments, temperatures and conditions may be defined. The following information should be taken as a guide only.

SA387 GR 9 CLASS 2 Weldable carbon steel plates for pressure vessels and boilers used in elevated temperatures. ASME SA387 Gr22 Cl 2 and ASTM A387 Gr22 Class 2 are 2.25% chromium – 1% Molybdenum and you can find out more effective working temperature up to 600°C, these Chromium and Molybdenum pressure vessel steel plates can effectively works very well in elevated temperatures with minimum aging of the product after thousands of hours of work.


The Molybdenum component in the SA387 ; A387 alloy, as well as increasing the tensile strength at high temperatures, also provides high resistance against oxidation and corrosion by increasing the lattice strain of the steel structure, this effectively stops the corrosive agents from dissolving the iron out of the steel structure, good for heat-resistant pressure vessels and good option for sour gas environments.


ASTM A387 Gr 22-2 and ASME SA387-22-2 steel is characterised by good weldability. These types of steel are used above all for manufacturing boilers, pressure vessels and pipes for the transportation of hot liquids. They also offer good properties at high and low temperatures. The product is always supplied in the normalised and tempered condition.

General Characteristics of AISI 1050
  • C1050 is a medium carbon, medium tensile steel with good strength, toughness and wear resistance.
  • C1050 is a versatile medium carbon engineering steel that can be through hardened to a little over 2.5” (63mm), as well as being flame or induction hardened to Rc61. The steel can be readily welded and machined providing correct procedures are followed.

Forging AISI 1050 Carbon Steel
  • C1050 is forged from 2100 – 2300 º F (1150 – 1280 º C) down to a temperature in the range 1600 – 1700 º F ( 870 – 925 º C.). The actual forging and finishing temperatures will depend on a number of factors, including overall reduction during forging and complexity of part being forged. Experience alone will determine near exact values for these two parameters. Parts are air cooled after forging.

Applications of AISI 1050
  • This grade of steel is used for the manufacture of forged shafts and gears and for a wide range of applications that can make use of its good combination of mechanical properties. HEAT TREATMENT
  • Heat treatment is carried out on this grade to render it suitable for machining and to impart to it specified mechanical properties.

Annealing
  • Full annealing of small C1050 forgings is carried out between 1450 and 1600 º F (790 – 870 º C) followed by furnace cooling at 50 º F (10 º C) per hour, to 1200 º F (650 º C) and air cooling.

Normalizing
  • The normalizing temperature range for this grade is typically 1550 – 1600 º F (840 – 870 º C,) Normalizing is followed by cooling in still air. When forgings are normalized before hardening and tempering or other heat treatment, the upper range of the normalizing temperature is used. When normalizing is the final treatment, the lower temperature range is used. HARDENING
  • Hardening of this grade is carried out from an austenitizing temperature of 1500 – 1600 º F (820 – 870 º C) followed by oil or water quenching.
  • Flame and induction hardening may be carried out by heating quickly to the desired case depth and quenching in water or oil. This should be followed by a tempering treatment at 300 – 400 º F (150 – 200 º C) to reduce stresses in the case, without affecting its hardness. A surface hardness as high as Rc 61 may be obtained from C1050 by this treatment.

Tempering
  • Tempering after normal hardening and oil or water quenching is carried out at 750 – 1260 º F (400 – 680 º C) to give the required mechanical properties as determined by practical experience.

Machinability
  • Machinability of C1050 is good providing the full annealing cycle described above is used, A coarse lamellar pearlite to coarse spheroidite microstructure gives optimum machinability in C1050.

Weldability
  • This grade is readily welded with the correct procedure. Welding in the through hardened or flame or induction hardened conditions is not recommended.
  • Low-hydrogen electrodes are recommended together with preheat at 300 – 800 º F (150 – 430 º C.) to be maintained during welding, Cool slowly in sand or ashes and stress relieve where possible. It may be that in certain instances normalizing may be called for after welding.

One of the tasks of the program involves the investigation of advanced stronger low-alloy steels that have adequate resistance to hydrogen attack at temperatures to 565°c. We studied a standard 2 1/4 cr-1 mo steel, a modified 2 1/4 cr-1 mo steel developed by the japan steelworks of muroran, japan, and several v-ni-simodified 2 1/4 cr-1 mo steels produced by the united states steel c0mpany.

Nextgen Steel & Alloys is an EN24 / EN24T flat bar and round bar steel stockholders and suppliers, delivering to the whole of the India. This grade is a nickel chromium molybdenum specification usually supplied hardened and tempered as EN24T or EN24U. EN24T steel is readily machineable and combines a good high tensile steel strength with shock resistance, ductility and wear resistance. It is a widely used engineering steel with a tensile strength of 850/1000 N/mm². It has reasonably good impact properties at low temperatures, whilst it is also suitable for a variety of elevated temperature applications. Flame or induction hardening of EN24T can give a case hardness of 50 HRc or higher.

Application of EN24 Flat Bars:
EN24 was originally introduced for use in the motor vehicle and machine tool industries for gears, pinions, shafts, spindles and the like. Later its applications became much more extended. Suitable to produce parts for such as locomotives, cranes, rolling mills, coal cutting machinery etc. where good strength and fatigue resistance is called for. Other applications for EN24 and EN24T are found in die casting and hot metal working, such as die bolsters, racks and pinions, angle pins for pressure die casting, hot stamping dies for aluminium stamping, die beds for steel stamping, lower temperature nut, bolt and rivet heading dies, large section drop forging dies. It is widely used in the plastic and rubber moulding industries for moulds (particularly rubber moulds), hob retaining rings, pattens, retaining rings for built up moulds, stop pins for moulds. For moulds EN24 is normally supplies hardened and tempered to ‘T’ condition. If a higher hardness is desired EN24T should be annealed and then heat treated to the required hardness.

PROPERTIES OF T/P92 STEEL WELD METALS FOR ULTRA SUPER CRTITICAL (USC) POWER PLANT Zhuyao Zhang, Graham Holloway, Adam Marshall, Metrode Products Limited, UK Abstract In order to achieve higher efficiencies and reduce emissions of environmentally damaging gases, new power generation technology requires high pressure and high temperature parameters. These have directly resulted in the introduction of ultra super critical (USC) plant and applications of a series of advanced Cr-Mo creep resistant steels. Among these newly developed ferritic steels, T/P92 has creep strength 25%-30% higher than the currently widely used modified 9%Cr steel T/P91 and has been specified as one of the major alloys for the construction of USC plant. The present paper summarises the important phase transformation characteristics and properties of matching filler metals for T/P92 steel and discusses factors that influence the performance of these weld metals. Key words: Ultra Super Critical (USC), T/P92 steels, welding, weld metal, Creep 1Introduction Fossil fuels are currently the main means of obtaining electric power, about 40% of electricity we consume is still supplied by thermal power plants. However, the operation of conventional coal fired power plant releases more harmful gases, such as CO2, NOx and SOx, than other power generation technology. Finding an effective solution to reduce the emissions of harmful gases has been the major challenge for the power generation industry as well as alloy material developers. Ultra Super Critical (USC) technology allows power plant to work at higher steam temperatures and pressures, hence significantly increasing the efficiency of thermal power plant, reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions of harmful green house gases. When USC plant was introduced in the late 90s, the 9%Cr ferritic creep resistant alloy specified for the main steam pipe and other critical components was T/P91 steel. The T/P91 alloy allowed typical operating parameters up to 290bar pressure, main steam temperature 580C and re-heat steam temperature 580C [1]. As development has progressed, the new generation Cr-Mo alloys, T/P92, has replaced T/P91 alloy for USC unit. Compared to T/P91 steel, T/P92 steel has 25%-30% higher creep strength. The maximum design parameters of an USC unit have increased to 300bar/610C/620C -630C [2-4]; the efficiency of USC plant is now approaching 50%. In recent years, as one of the most important steels for USC plant, T/P92 steel has found more and more widespread use. To enable the full exploitation of T/P92 base material and increase its range of applications the development of matching consumables has been necessary. These matching consumables have been used for the fabrication and site erection of USC units using T/P92 steel. The present paper discusses the design philosophy of matching welding consumables; the relevant phase transformation temperatures, such as austenitisation temperatures during heating (Ac1), martensite transformation temperatures (Ms/Mf) during continuous cooling and effect of alloying elements on these temperatures. Based on the examination of these transformation temperatures, recommendations are made on welding parameters and postweld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures. Previous papers by the same authors provide additional background on the general tensile properties of T/P92 weld metals and also the effect of welding process on mechanical properties [5,6].

Mechanical Tests Specified
  • Transverse or Longitudinal Tension Test and Flattening Test, Hardness Test, or Bend Test
  • For material heat treated in a batch-type furnace, tests shall be made on 5% of the pipe from each treated lot. For small lots, at least one pipe shall be tested.
  • For material heat treated by the continuous process, tests shall be made on a sufficient number of pipe to constitute 5% of the lot, but in no case less than 2 pipe.

Notes for Hardness Test:
  • P11 shall not have a hardness not exceeding 250 HB/265 HV [25HRC].

Notes for Bend Test:
  • For pipe whose diameter exceeds NPS 25 and whose diameter to wall thickness ratio is 7.0 or less shall be subjected to the bend test instead of the flattening test.
  • Other pipe whose diameter equals or exceeds NPS 10 may be given the bend test in place of the flattening test subject to the approval of the purchaser.
  • The bend test specimens shall be bent at room temperature through 180 without cracking on the outside of the bent portion.

Scope:This specification covers nominal wall and minimum wall seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. Pipe ordered to this specification shall be suitable for bending, flanging (vanstoning), and similar forming operations, and for fusion welding. Selection will depend upon design, service conditions, mechanical properties, and high-temperature characteristics.

What do chromium and molybdenum do to steel?
  • The addition to steel of the alloys chromium and molybdenum bring characteristics which are particularly desirable for units operating in high temperatures. Both alloys improve high temperature strength, molybdenum improves high temperature creep strength, both improve hardenability and there are additional benefits from wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and impact resistance. At the same time a chrome moly alloy is relatively easy to fabricate.
