AISI S2 is a Shock-Resisting Steel grade Tool Steel. It is composed of (in weight percentage) 0.40-0.55% Carbon (C), 0.30-0.50% Manganese (Mn), 0.90-1.20% Silicon (Si), 0.30% Nickel (Ni), 0.30-0.60% Molybdenum (Mo), 0.50% Vanadium (V), 0.25% Copper (Cu), 0.03% Phosphorus (P), 0.03% Sulfur (S), and the base metal Iron (Fe). Other designations of AISI S2 tool steel include UNS T41902 and AISI S2.Steel is the common name for a large family of iron alloys. Steels can either be cast directly to shape, or into ingots which are reheated and hot worked into a wrought shape by forging, extrusion, rolling, or other processes. Wrought steels are the most common engineering material used, and come in a variety of forms with different finishes and properties. Tool steels typically have excess carbides (carbon alloys) which make them hard and wear-resistant. Most tool steels are used in a heat-treated state, generally hardened and tempered.

 

The typical elastic modulus of tool steels at room temperature (25°C) ranges from 190 to 210 GPa. The typical density of tool steels ranges from 7.72 to 8.0 g/cm3. The typical tensile strength varies between 640 and 2000 MPa. The wide range of ultimate tensile strength is largely due to different heat treatment conditions.

This grade is a nickel chromium molybdenum specification usually supplied hardened and tempered as EN24T or EN24U. EN24T steel is readily machineable and combines a good high tensile steel strength with shock resistance, ductility and wear resistance. It is a widely used engineering steel with a tensile strength of 850/1000 N/mm². It has reasonably good impact properties at low temperatures, whilst it is also suitable for a variety of elevated temperature applications. Flame or induction hardening of EN24T can give a case hardness of 50 HRc or higher.

Applications   
  • EN24 was originally introduced for use in the motor vehicle and machine tool industries for gears, pinions, shafts, spindles and the like. Later its applications became much more extended. Suitable to produce parts for such as locomotives, _cranes, rolling mills, coal cutting machinery etc. where good strength and fatigue resistance is called for. Other applications for EN24 and EN24T are found in die casting and hot metal working, such as die bolsters, racks and pinions, angle pins for pressure die casting, hot stamping dies for aluminium stamping, die beds for steel stamping, lower temperature nut, bolt and rivet heading dies, large section drop forging dies. It is widely used in the plastic and rubber moulding industries for moulds (particularly rubber moulds), hob retaining rings, patens, retaining rings for built up moulds, stop pins for moulds. For moulds EN24 is normally supplies hardened and tempered to ‘T’ condition. If a higher hardness is desired EN24T should be annealed and then heat treated to the required hardness.

Description

Haynes 25 is a cobalt-based alloy which combines good formability and excellent high-temperature properties. At 1800°F, Haynes 25 sheet has a 100 hour stress-rupture strength of 7000 psi. The alloy is resistant to oxidation and carburization to 1900°F. Haynes 25 has given good service in many jet engine parts. Description

Alloy 617 is a solid-solution, nickel-chromium-cobalt-molydenum alloy with an exceptional combination of high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. The alloy also has excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environment, and it is readily formed and welded by conventional techniques.

The high nickel and chromium contents make the alloy resistant to a variety of both reducing and oxidizing media. The aluminum, in conjunction with the chromium, provides oxidation resistance at high temperatures. Solid-solution strengthening is imparted by the cobalt and molydenum. The combination of high strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures over 1800°F makes alloy 617 an attractive material for such components as ducting, combustion cans, and transition liner in both aircraft, and land based gas turbines. Because of its resistance to high-temperature corrosion, the alloy is used for catalyst-grid supports in the production of nitric acid, for heat-treating baskets, and for reduction boats in the refining of molybdenum. Alloy 617 also offers attractive properties for components of power-generating plants, both fossil-fueled and nuclear.

PH 13-8 Mo* stainless is a martensitic precipitation/age-hardening stainless steel capable of high strength and hardness along with good levels of resistance to both general corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. In addition, the alloy exhibits good ductility and toughness in large sections in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. The excellent properties of PH 13-8 Mo stainless are obtained through close control of chemical composition and microstructure plus specialized melting which reduces impurities and minimizes segregation. Compared to other ferrous-based materials, this alloy offers a high level of useful mechanical properties under severe environmental conditions.

13-8 Mo stainless has good fabrication characteristics and can be age-hardened by a single low temperature treatment. Cold work prior to aging increases the aging, especially for lower aging tempratures.

13-8 Mo stainless has been used for valve parts, fittings, cold-headed and machined fasteners, shafts, landing gear parts, pins, lockwashers, aircraft components, nuclear reactor components and petrochemical applications requiring resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Generally, this alloy should be considered where high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking are required in a steel showing minimal directionality in properties.
