M2 is molybdenum based high-speed steel in tungsten–molybdenum series. The carbides in it are small and evenly distributed. It has high wear resistance. After heat treatment, its hardness is the same as T1, but its bending strength can reach 4700 MPa, and its toughness and thermo-plasticity are higher than T1 by 50%. It is usually used to manufacture a variety of tools, such as drill bits, taps and reamers. Its decarburization sensitivity is a little bit high.

M35 is similar to M2, but with 5% cobalt added. The addition of cobalt increases heat resistance. M35 is also known as HSSE or HSS-E.

M42 is a molybdenum-series high-speed steel alloy with an additional 8% cobalt. It is widely used in metal manufacturing industries because of its superior red-hardness as compared to more conventional high-speed steels, allowing for shorter cycle times in production environments due to higher cutting speeds or from the increase in time between tool changes. M42 is also less prone to chipping when used for interrupted cuts and costs less when compared to the same tool made of carbide. Tools made from cobalt-bearing high speed steels can often be identified by the letters HSS-Co.

The main use of high speed steels continues to be in the manufacture of various cutting tools: drills, taps, milling cutters, tool bits, gear cutters, saw blades, planer and jointer blades, router bits, etc., although usage for punches and dies is increasing.

High speed steels also found a market in fine hand tools where their relatively good toughness at high hardness, coupled with high abrasion resistance, made them suitable for low speed applications requiring a durable keen (sharp) edge, such as files, chisels, hand plane blades, and high quality kitchen, pocket knifives and swords.

High speed steel tools are the most popular for use in woodturning, as the speed of movement of the work past the edge is relatively high for handheld tools, and HSS holds its edge far longer than high carbon steel tools can.

Strong and Oxidation Resistance

HASTELLOY® X alloy (UNS N06002 (W86002) is a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy that possesses an exceptional combination of oxidation resistance, fabricability and high-temperature strength. It has also been found to be exceptionally resistant to stress-corrosion cracking in petrochemical applications. X alloy exhibits good ductility after prolonged exposure at temperatures of 1200, 1400, 1600°F (650, 760 and 870°C) for 16,000 hours.

Ease of Fabrication

NEXTGEN STEEL & ALLOYS HASTELLOY® X alloy has excellent forming and welding characteristics. It may be forged or otherwise hot-worked, providing it is held at 2150°F (1177°C) for a time sufficient to bring the entire piece to temperature. As a consequence of its good ductility, HASTELLOY® X alloy is also readily formed by cold- working. All hot- or cold- worked parts should be annealed and rapidly cooled in order to restore the best balance of properties.

  • The alloy can be welded by a variety of techniques, including gas tungsten arc (GTAW), gas metal arc (GMAW), shielded metal arc (SMAW), and resistance welding.
  • Additional information regarding fabrication can be found here.

Heat Treatment:

Wrought forms of HASTELLOY® X alloy are furnished in the solution heat-treated condition unless otherwise specified. X alloy is typically solution heat-treated at 2150°F (1177°C) and rapid cooled. Bright annealed products are cooled in hydrogen. Annealing at temperatures lower than the solution heat- treating may cause precipitation of secondary phases, which may affect the alloy’s strength and ductility.

Useful for Aircraft, Furnace and Chemical Process Components

X alloy has wide use in gas turbine engines for combustion zone components such as transition ducts, combustor cans, spray bars and flame holders as well as in afterburners, tailpipes and cabin heaters. It is recommended for use in industrial furnace applications because it has unusual resistant to oxidizing, reducing and neutral atmospheres. Furnace rolls of this alloy were still in good condition after operating for 8,700 hours at 2150°F (1177°C). HASTELLOY® X alloy is also used in the chemical process industry for retorts, muffles, catalyst support grids, furnace baffles, tubing for pyrolysis operations and flash drier components.

Other common names: Alloy X, Inconel® HX

Hastelloy X is a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum superalloy with outstanding high temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and fabricability. Alloy X’s oxidation resistance is excellent up to 2200° F. This nickel steel alloy has also been found to be exceptionally resistant to stress-corrosion cracking in petrochemical applications. Matrix stiffening provided by the molybdenum content results in high strength in a solid-solution alloy having good fabrication characteristics. Although this nickel alloy is primarily noted for heat and oxidation resistance it also has good resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, carburization, and excellent resistance to reducing or carburizing atmospheres. Two common conditions that often lead to early failure in high temperature alloys, carburization and nitriding, Hastelloy X resists.

Description

Haynes 242 alloy offers excellent high-temperature strength, low thermal expansion characteristics, and good oxidation resistance. HAYNES® 242® alloy (UNS N10242) is an age-hardenable nickel-molybdenum chromium alloy which derives its strength from a long-range ordering reaction upon aging. It has tensile and creep strength properties up to 1300°F (705°C) which are as much as double those for solid solution strengthened alloys, but with high ductility in the aged condition. The thermal expansion characteristics of 242® alloy are much lower than those for most other alloys, and it has very good oxidation resistance up to 1500°F (815°C). Other attractive features include excellent low cycle fatigue properties, very good thermal stability, and resistance to high-temperature fluorine and fluoride environments.

Principal Features

HAYNES® 556® alloy (UNS R30556) is an iron-nickel-chromium-cobalt alloy that combines effective resistance to sulfidizing, carburizing and chlorine-bearing environments at high temperatures with good oxidation resistance, fabricability, and excellent high-temperature strength. It has also been found to resist corrosion by molten chloride salts and other salts, and is resistant to corrosion from molten zinc.

Ease of Fabrication

HAYNES® 556® alloy has excellent forming and welding characteristics. It may be forged or otherwise hot-worked, providing that it is held at 2150°F (1175°C) for a time sufficient to bring the entire piece to temperature. As a consequence of its good ductility, 556® alloy is also readily formed by cold working. All hot- or cold-worked parts should be annealed and rapidly cooled in order to restore the best balance of properties.

The alloy can be welded by a variety of techniques, including gas tungsten arc (GTAW), gas metal arc (GMAW), shielded metal arc (coated electrode), and resistance welding.

Heat Treatment

HAYNES® 556® alloy is furnished in the solution heat treated condition, unless otherwise specified. The alloy is normally solution heat treated at 2150°F (1175°C) and rapidly cooled or water-quenched for optimum properties. Heat treatments at temperatures lower than the solution heat-treating temperature may cause precipitation of secondary phases.

Applications

HAYNES® 556® alloy combines properties which make it highly useful for service at elevated-temperature in moderately to severely corrosive environments. Applications can include tubing and structural members in municipal and industrial waste incinerators, rotary calciners and kilns for minerals processing, and non-rotating components in industrial gas turbines burning low-grade fuels.

In the chemical process industry, 556® alloy is used for applications in rotary calciners, carbon regenerators, and in processes involving high-sulfur petroleum feedstocks.

In the metallurgical process industry, 556® alloy is widely used for hot-dip galvanizing fixtures, spinners and baskets, and for high speed furnace fans. 556® alloy is also employed in air preheaters of diesel engines, the inner covers of coil annealing furnaces, and in various high-temperature applications in the aerospace industry.
