INCOLOY® alloy 825 (UNS N08825/W.Nr. 2.4858) is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum, copper, and titanium. The alloy’s chemical composition, given in Table 1, is designed to provide exceptional resistance to many corrosive environments. The nickel content is sufficient for resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking. The nickel, in conjunction with the molybdenum and copper, also gives outstanding resistance to reducing environments such as those containing sulfuric and phosphoric acids. The molybdenum also aids resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The alloy’s chromium content confers resistance to a variety of oxidizing substances such as nitric acid, nitrates and oxidizing salt. The titanium addition serves, with an appropriate heat treatment, to stabilize the alloy against sensitization to intergranular corrosion. The resistance of INCOLOY alloy 825 to general and localized corrosion under diverse conditions gives the alloy broad usefulness. Applications include chemical processing, pollution control, oil and gas recovery, acid production, pickling operations, nuclear fuel reprocessing, and handling of radioactive wastes. Applications for alloy 825 are similar to those for INCOLOY alloy 020.

Corrosion Resistance The outstanding attribute of INCOLOY alloy 825 is its high level of corrosion resistance. In both reducing and oxidize environments, the alloy resists general corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking. Some environments in which INCOLOY alloy 825 is particularly useful are sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfurcontaining flue gases, sour gas and oil wells, and sea water. All standard machining operations are readily performed on INCOLOY alloy 825. The alloy normally has optimum machining characteristics in the annealed temper. Tooling and procedures described for Group C alloys should be used; for more information refer to Special Metals publication “Machining”, Hot and Cold Forming The hot-working range for INCOLOY alloy 825 is 1600 to 2150°F (870 to 1180°C). For optimum corrosion resistance, final hot working should be done at temperatures between 1600 and 1800°F (870 and 980°C). Cooling after hot working should be air cool or faster. Heavy sections may become sensitized during cooling from the hot-working temperature, and therefore be subject to intergranular corrosion in certain media. A stabilizing anneal (see above) restores resistance to corrosion. If material is to be welded or subjected to further thermal treatment and subsequently exposed to an environment that may cause intergranular corrosion, the stabilizing anneal should be performed regardless of cooling rate from the hot-working temperature. Cold-forming properties and practices are essentially the same for INCOLOY alloy 825 as for INCONEL alloy 600. Although work-hardening rate is somewhat less than for the common grades of austenitic stainless steels, it is still relatively high. Forming equipment should be well powered and strongly built to compensate for the increase in yield strength with plastic deformation.

Alloy 200 (UNS designation N02200) and Alloy 201 (UNS designation N02201) are wrought commercially pure nickel. The alloys differ only in the maximum carbon level allowed by specification, 0.15 % maximum for Alloy 200 and 0.02 % maximum for Alloy 201. Both alloys provide highly ductile mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. Both alloys provide corrosion resistance in neutral to moderately reducing environments. In the annealed condition, either alloy possesses the approximate strength of mild steel. As-rolled material is sometimes furnished to provide higher strength levels.

Alloy 200 and Alloy 201 provide high thermal and electrical conductivity in comparison to nickel base alloys, stainless steels and low alloy steels. The alloys are ferromagnetic.

Because long-time exposures of Alloy 200 in the 800 to 1200 °F (427-649 °C) range result in precipitation of a carbon phase and loss of ductility, it is not recommended for service above 600 °F (316 °C). For applications above 600 °F (316 °C), the low carbon Alloy 201 should be considered.
For proposed service temperatures approaching 800 °F (427 °C), resistance to creep should be considered as a design factor.
Nickel 200 & Nickel 201: Nickel Alloys and Nickel Copper Alloys

Nickel 200 Alloy is a commercially pure nickel that exhibits good corrosion resistance and has rather low electrical resistivity. It’s used in caustic solutions, food handling equipment, and general corrosion-resistant parts and structures. Because it contains magnetic and mechanical properties, it can be used in devices that require magnetic actuated parts.

Nickel 201 Alloy is similar to Nickel 200 Alloy and is a low carbon modification of the 200 Alloy. It has a low annealed hardness and very low work-hardening rate. Those who use Nickel 201 Alloy find it desirable in deep drawing, spinning, and coining. It addition, it can be applied to corrosion-resistant equipment including but not limited to: caustic evaporators, spun anodes, and laboratory crucibles.

Nickel 205 Alloy contains controlled additions of magnesium and titanium (small amounts of both) and exhibits good oxidation resistance. It’s commonly used in support wires, vacuum tube components, pins, terminals, lead wires, and other electronic components of the like.

Nickel 270 Alloy is a high purity nickel alloy commonly used for electrical resistant thermometers.

These nickel steel alloys are identical except for the higher level of carbon in alloy 800H, and the addition of up to 1.20 percent aluminum and titanium in alloy 800HT. Incoloy 800 was the first of these alloys and it was slightly modified into Incoloy 800H. This modification was to control carbon (.05-.10%) and grain size to optimize stress rupture properties. Incoloy 800HT has further modifications to the combined titanium and aluminum levels (.85-1.20%) to ensure optimum high temperature properties.The nickel alloy is dual certified (800H/HT) and combines the properties of both forms. Incoloy 800H/HT alloy was intended for high temperature structural applications. The nickel content makes the alloys highly resistant to both chloride stress-corrosion cracking and to embrittlement from precipitation of sigma phase. The general corrosion resistance is excellent. In the solution annealed condition, alloys 800H and 800HT have superior creep and stress rupture properties. Today, most suppliers, including Mega Mex, only carry the dual certified 800H/HT alloy.

 

Incoloy 800 is primarily used in applications with temperatures up to 1100° F, where alloys 800H and 800HT are normally used in temperatures above 1100° F where resistance to creep and rupture is required. The chemical balance allows the nickel steel alloy to exhibit excellent resistance to carburization, oxidation and nitriding atmospheres. Incoloy 800HT will not become embrittled even after long periods of usage in the 1200-1600° F range where many stainless steels become brittle. Excellent cold forming characteristics typically associated with the nickel-chromium alloys are exhibited with 800HT. When cold formed extensively the grain size produces a visibly undulated surface called “orange peel”. Incoloy 800HT can be welded by the common techniques used on stainless steels.
